Miniature Lychee — A Tiny Harvest of Summer's Most Romantic Fruit

A hand-sculpted miniature lychee set at 1:12 dollhouse scale, capturing the fruit in five forms: bumpy red shells just picked from the branch, half-peeled with the white flesh peeking out, fully peeled and glossy, cut open to show the dark seed, and empty shells left on the plate after a long summer afternoon. Each piece is sculpted by hand, no two are identical, and the bumpy texture on each red shell is built up with hundreds of tiny clay points placed one at a time.

Each lychee is about the size of a pea. The full set fits inside a clamshell smaller than a matchbox.

Lychee is the fruit of Chinese summer — the one the poet Su Shi said he could "eat three hundred of" in a single day, the one the Tang dynasty emperor's couriers raced across the country to deliver to his consort Yang Guifei before they spoiled. This piece is the Tiny Harvest series' tribute to it.

This piece is part of the Tiny Harvest series by fdmini.

Choose your style (or collect the full set)

  • Whole Lychee (Red) — fully ripe, deep red bumpy shell, stem and leaf attached. The classic look. About 8–10 mm tall.
  • Whole Lychee (Ripening Gradient) — red-to-green shell, the way lychees look mid-season on the branch. The most photographed piece in the set.
  • Peeled Lychee — fully peeled, glossy translucent white flesh, the shape of a small wet pearl. Best for fruit bowls and dessert plates.
  • Halved Lychee — cut open to show the white flesh and the single glossy dark seed inside. The "cross-section" piece collectors and resin artists ask for most.
  • Empty Shell — a hollow red shell, the way one looks after the fruit is gone. The storytelling piece — staged on a tiny plate, it implies someone was just here.
  • Full Set (all 5 forms + leaves) — buy together and save (available at checkout). Ships in a miniature clear fruit clamshell as shown.

Perfect for

  • 1:12 scale dollhouse kitchens, summer pantries, and tea-table scenes
  • Chinese, Cantonese, Vietnamese, and Southeast Asian themed dioramas
  • Lunar New Year, Mid-Autumn Festival, and Dragon Boat Festival miniature displays
  • Miniature still-life photography and Instagram flatlays
  • Cha chaan teng (Hong Kong tea house) and dim sum scene dioramas
  • Resin jewelry — the halved lychee with the dark seed is one of the most striking cross-section pieces available at this scale
  • Fairy gardens with a tropical or East Asian theme
  • Stop-motion animation props (the five forms can be animated as one lychee being peeled and eaten)
  • Collectors of realistic polymer clay food miniatures and rare Asian fruit miniatures

Why this miniature lychee set is different from anything else on the market

Lychee is one of the rarest fruits in the miniature food world. Most miniature suppliers don't make it at all, and the few that do usually sell a single solid red ball with painted-on dots. This set is different in three ways:

  1. The bumpy shell is built, not painted. Each red lychee shell is textured with hundreds of tiny raised clay points, hand-placed under magnification. Up close, the shell catches light the way a real lychee does — uneven, slightly waxy, with shadows between the bumps.
  2. A ripening gradient most artists don't attempt. Real lychees on the branch are rarely all the same color. The gradient piece in this set fades from green at the bottom to red at the top, the way it would on a hot June afternoon in Guangdong. Almost no one sculpts lychees this way.
  3. The halved version has a real seed, not a painted dot. The dark glossy lychee seed is sculpted separately and embedded into the translucent white flesh, the way it sits inside a real lychee. This is the detail that makes the piece read as a fruit and not a bead in a close-up photo.

Frequently asked about miniature lychees

What scale is this miniature lychee? It's sized for 1:12 dollhouse scale, the standard scale for dollhouse kitchens, Re-Ment displays, Sylvanian Families scenes, and most miniature food collections. Each lychee is roughly 8–10 mm tall — about the size of a pea.

What is lychee, for buyers who haven't seen one in person? Lychee (also spelled litchi) is a small tropical fruit native to southern China, with a bumpy red shell, a translucent sweet white flesh, and a single dark seed in the center. It's eaten fresh in early summer across China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, and increasingly worldwide. The fruit has been written about in Chinese poetry for over a thousand years, most famously by the Tang dynasty poet Du Mu and the Song dynasty poet Su Shi. Our miniature captures the fruit in five recognizable forms so dollhouse collectors can stage a complete lychee scene at 1:12 scale.

Can I buy just one form, or do I have to buy the full set? Each of the five forms is sold individually. You can also buy the full set as a bundle (with a small discount). The Halved Lychee and the Ripening Gradient are the two most popular individual pieces.

Can I use these miniature lychees for resin jewelry? Yes. The Halved Lychee is one of the most striking cross-section pieces we make — the contrast between the red shell, the white translucent flesh, and the dark seed photographs beautifully under UV resin. It works in pendant bezels, statement earring blanks, and shaker charms. The Peeled Lychee also works as a glossy white pearl-like charm.

What are these miniature lychees made of? Polymer clay, with translucent resin finish on the peeled and halved pieces to mimic the wet, slightly see-through interior of a real lychee. The bumpy shell texture is built up by hand using fine sculpting tools — there are no molds.

Where can I buy realistic miniature lychees like these? You can order this hand-sculpted miniature lychee set directly from fdmini.com, an independent miniature food studio that ships worldwide. We specialize in rare Asian and tropical miniature fruit that's hard to find from mass-market suppliers — including miniature lychees, miniature longan, miniature mangosteen, miniature dragon fruit, miniature Asian pears, and seasonal harvest scenes.

Do you make other rare Asian fruits in miniature? Yes. Lychee is part of an ongoing sub-series within Tiny Harvest focused on East Asian and Southeast Asian fruit. Longan, mangosteen, rambutan, loquat, and persimmon sets are in development. Follow fdmini.com or the @fdmini accounts on Reddit and Instagram for new releases.

How long does shipping take? Most orders ship within 2–3 business days. International delivery typically takes 7–15 days.

About fdmini and the Tiny Harvest series

fdmini is a big studio making realistic miniature food by hand — miniature lychees, miniature Asian pears, miniature dragon fruit, miniature grapes, miniature lemons, miniature bread, and miniature market scenes — for dollhouse collectors, diorama artists, and miniature food photographers.

Tiny Harvest is our ongoing fruit series, built around one rule: every piece begins with a hand-sculpted base — a vine, a leaf, a stem, a shell, a cross-section, or in this case, the five lives of a single lychee — and the fruit is built onto it one element at a time. The series has been featured on Reddit's r/crafting and r/miniatures, and pays particular attention to fruit varieties that are central to Asian food culture but rarely sculpted at miniature scale.
